Two friends from college – one a biomedical engineer and the other a dentist – would often muse on working together, but their jobs only left time for theoretical explorations. That changed one day when the engineer asked the dentist to help devise a concept that would provide a useful learning project for students in the university course he was teaching. Together, they created a critical concept but recognized that its implementation was still in its infancy.
